Teak Wood Gallows
Teak Wood Gallows is the solo project of Vancouver Island's Cam Masterton.
A self taught musician, who in early life thought the only music that existed was that of The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton and songs from musicals, Teak Wood Gallows has learned to broaden his sonic diet, the way his later influences, Bjork, Cat Power and Steve Reich have seemed to do.
Although he plays his acoustic guitar on most tracks, you are also likely to be treated to a decadent layering of piano, synthesizer, and if you're lucky, perhaps even a little sprinkling of harp. These ingredients provide the perfect recipe over which TWG's smooth and steady baritone sits like a frosting - Orange, with a hint of Grand Marnier.
Weather he is writing about love, the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a character from his favourite Brian De Palma film, or finding a new way of covering a classic, Teak Wood Gallows strives to capture his subject like a photographer with a camera. If the artist can take a few steps back from the image, along with the audience, perhaps there is a greater hope of understanding...
Above all else, Teak Wood Gallows is a dreamer who can never quite seem to get the sandman to return his calls...
